Why TV Specs Feel Like a Foreign Language

Walk into any electronics section or browse an online listing for a new television, and you'll quickly encounter a wall of acronyms: 4K, 8K, OLED, QLED, HDR10, Dolby Vision, 120Hz, VRR, HDMI 2.1. Manufacturers assume shoppers either already know these terms or will simply trust that bigger numbers mean better performance.

Neither assumption is fair. Understanding what these specs actually measure helps you read a product listing critically — and decide which features genuinely matter for how you watch. Resolution: How Many Pixels Fill the Screen

Resolution describes the total number of pixels that make up the picture, expressed as horizontal × vertical (e.g., 3840 × 2160). More pixels generally means finer detail — but only up to the point where your viewing distance and screen size allow you to perceive the difference.

  • Full HD (1080p): 1920 × 1080 pixels. Still the standard for broadcast TV and most streaming at lower bitrates.

Refresh Rate and Motion Handling

  • 60Hz: The baseline for most broadcast and streaming content. Adequate for everyday viewing.
  • 120Hz: Common on current mid-range and higher-end panels. Noticeably smoother for fast motion and is the standard for console gaming at high frame rates.

A word of caution on "effective" or "motion rate" numbers: Some spec sheets advertise 240Hz or higher through motion interpolation — a processing technique that inserts artificial frames to create the appearance of smoother motion. This is different from a native 120Hz panel. Interpolation can produce an unnaturally smooth look (sometimes called the "soap opera effect") that many viewers find distracting. It can typically be turned off in display settings.

Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is a feature that lets the TV sync its refresh rate dynamically to the output of a connected game console or PC, reducing screen tearing. It requires HDMI 2.1 on both the TV and the source device.

HDR: High Dynamic Range Explained

HDR (High Dynamic Range) expands the range between the darkest blacks and the brightest highlights a TV can display, and widens the color gamut. An HDR-capable TV paired with HDR-mastered content can show more nuance in shadows and specular highlights than a standard display.

Several competing HDR formats exist, and compatibility matters:

  • HDR10: The baseline open standard, supported by virtually all HDR TVs and content platforms. Uses static metadata — meaning the brightness settings are fixed for the entire film or episode.
  • HDR10+: An enhancement that adds dynamic metadata, adjusting brightness scene by scene or even frame by frame. Supported by some streaming services and Blu-ray releases.
  • Dolby Vision: A licensed format also using dynamic metadata, generally regarded as well-implemented on compatible displays. Requires licensing fees from manufacturers, so not all TVs support it.
  • HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma): Designed for broadcast HDR (live TV, cable, satellite). Backward compatible with SDR displays.
