Section width (215): The three-digit number that follows is the tire's width in millimeters, measured across the widest point of the inflated tire from sidewall to sidewall.
Aspect ratio (65): After the slash comes the aspect ratio — the sidewall height as a percentage of the section width. A 65 means the sidewall height is 65% of 215 mm. Lower numbers (40, 45) signal a low-profile tire with a shorter, stiffer sidewall.
Construction type (R): The letter R stands for Radial, which is the standard construction for virtually all modern passenger tires. You may occasionally see B (Bias-ply) on older or specialty tires.
Rim diameter (16): The final number before the load and speed codes is the wheel diameter in inches. This must match your wheel exactly — a 16-inch tire will not seat on a 17-inch rim.

Load Index and Speed Rating Explained

Load index (98): This two- or three-digit number maps to a specific maximum load capacity per tire. A load index of 98 corresponds to 1,653 lbs. per tire. Speed rating (H): The trailing letter indicates the maximum sustained speed the tire is engineered to handle. The speed rating reflects not just raw speed but the tire's ability to manage heat buildup at that speed — a critical safety consideration.
